每年英國有近萬名高中生參與BBO，優秀者被選拔組成英國國家隊參加國際生物學奧林匹克（IBO）。BBO獲獎者備受頂尖大學認可，獲獎證書在UCAS申請中具有顯著加分作用，特別是申請牛津、劍橋、帝國理工等G5大學的醫學和生物相關專業。

BBO側重生化、遺傳、動植物及標本識別圖片題。大部分題可依靠高中課內知識解答，但有圖表分析題和英文專業詞彙要求。對A-Level Biology基礎紮實的學生有優勢。Most questions are answerable with A-Level knowledge, but the exam extends in breadth and requires strong biology vocabulary.
成績一般在考後6至8週內公佈，組委會以郵件通知。Results are typically released 6-8 weeks after the exam via email notification.

The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) is the UK's longest-running and most influential secondary school biology competition, established in 1995 and organized by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB). Nearly 10,000 UK high school students participate annually, with top performers selected to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
The BBO exam is a 90-minute individual written test covering seven areas: Cell Biology (20%), Animal Anatomy & Physiology (25%), Plant Anatomy & Physiology (15%), Genetics & Evolution (20%), Ecology (10%), Ethology (5%), and Biosystematics (5%).
